News on the News

The Citizen's website, citizen.com.

Recently some friends at the Laconia Citizen newspaper asked us for some input... So we're asking you.
Would you like the newspaper to be free?
Would you like it better if it was (smaller) tabloid size, rather than its current broadsheet (large, horizontal shape)?
What parts of the paper to you like - or would you like to see?

Breakfast Treat

Guitarist Scott Shattuck at the Blues Brunch in Bristol.

When the Sunday brunch was first introduced to America it came with a delightful assortment of breakfast and luncheon foods, everything from hot oatmeal and scrambled eggs to cold cuts and baked haddock. And it was served up with flavorful coffees, soft music and a relaxed atmosphere. (In the Lakes Region, the consensus best was the champagne version served at the old Joanna’s restaurant in Tilton.)
Unfortunately our cultural tendency to assume bigger-is-better eventually SuperSized the experience, resulting in ginormous buffet restaurants with a half-million food choices as you shared your meal with a half-million of your closest friends. Forget about a relaxed quiet ambiance.
Fortunately there’s been a revival of the original brunch buffet at the Cornucopia Bakeryat 26 Central Square in Bristol. Chef and owner Audrey Pellegrino has found success with a “Blues Brunch,” a unique once-a-month creative dining experience.
You can start with the ambiance: a cozy “downstairs” diningroom with exposed brick walls, windows open to the rapids of Newfound Lake and blues guitarist Scott Shattuck playing softly in the corner. (The space serves as Cornucopia’s deli/coffee shop on a daily basis.)
If the menu is not quite as diverse as you’d find at a full-service restaurant, it more than compensates with its tasteful choices.
Our favorite was the maple granola baked French toast casserole, made with walnuts and real maple syrup. It was full of sweet flavors in a delightfully soft-and-crunchy texture. (And how exactly is “pancake syrup” produced? Does it get squeezed out of the uneaten pancakes served earlier?)
A properly folded omelet – made to order with fresh eggs and Cajun lobster – was equally yummy. A lobster stew was an unexpected treat. And good old sausage gravy served on a biscuit was surprisingly light.
(The menu items change slightly for each event.)
And it includes a perfect blend of the “usual suspects”: rich corned beef hash, sweet fresh fruit, smoky bacon and sausages, scrumptious pancakes, light French crapes, English scones and a variety of toasts.
All the pastries we tasted – from the sweet almond croissants to the gluten-free blueberry muffins – had a hearty “grain-y” taste that was irresistible.
The “gluten-free” options are ongoing specialties at the Cornucopia so my health-conscious Super Spouse enjoyed the baked potatoes and onions dish casserole.
There’s no need to make reservations for the Blues Brunch but you may want to call ahead to be sure of the best time. It’s held the last Sunday of every month – that means this coming up Sunday, September 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost of this all-you-can-eat yumfest is more than reasonable: $9.95 for adults and $6.95 for children. Call 217-0005, or check out cornucopiabakery.com (or cornucopiabakery.blogspot.com). for more details. (Pellegrino also operates Cornucopia Catering at 568-8156 and 768-3214.)
It’s the return of the right way to kick off the week.

Our friends at the the Mill Fudge Factory in Bristol have a unique problem posted on their Facebook page: "We're making a new ice cream flavor that is in desperate need of a name! We're making it special for the New Hampshire Highland Games this weekend! Irish Cream Ice Cream with chunks of Scottish Whiskey Fudge! Please submit your suggestion... We use yours, you win a free pint!"
Don't care what you call it, as long as I get to taste it.

Top Lakes Region Eats

In the current issue of the Hippo, the arts & entertainment magazine based in Manchester, the editors name 50 favorite New Hampshire restaurants. Among those with ties to the Lakes Region are the Common Man (Ashland and Plymouth), the Homestead in Bristol, and Fratello’s Italian Grille, T-Bones Great American Eatery in Laconia, Cactus Jack’s and O Steak & Seafood, all in Laconia.
Not a bad group, we’d say.

Lake Reflections

One of the great “food” surprises of the last year was the Tilton Farmers’ Market.
It opened in the old Agway building on Rte. 3 in the fall and closed this past Saturday. Great food, neighborly vendors, a wonderful atmosphere... It’s the kind of community scene that gives the Lakes Region warm charm during the cold winter. And it was so popular, a police officer had to be on the state highway to unsnarl any possible traffic jams.
But the market is not long for this world.  Joan O’Connor, its owner and the proud producer of Joan’s Famous Composting Worms, says that Autoserve of Tilton, which owns the building and was a generous sponsor this year, needs the space for its own uses.
So when fall 2012 comes around, the 40-plus local farmers, craftsmen and other dealers will literally be out in the cold, unless someone can come forward with a suggestion for a new location. So, keep your eyes and ears open to help out these gallant entrepreneurs. (You can contact Joan at joconnornh@yahoo.com.)...
Hey, what happened to the van with that “Let’s Trade Houses” sign that used to sit off Rte. 106 by Rte. 393 in Loudon? Did the owner ever find a new house? Or did he buy a new car that wasn’t big enough for a sign? Just wondering...
Amazing, but true. Gunstock Mountain Resort, the first ski resort in the state to have a ski lift, is getting ready to celebrate its 75thseason. (Ironically, it was originally called Belknap Mountain Resort, just because someone incorrectly identified the peak. "Gunstock" is much better than "Belknap" - strong, action word, perfect for skiing.) To celebrate, the resort is holding a sale on season ski passes.
And they finally opened their new ZipTour, which includes the fourth and sixth longest ziplines in the world.
See Gunstock.com...
We love funny, thoughtful, interesting signs.
A store in Bristol seems to have a knack for them. Not long ago, it identified itself as “Small Mart.” (No doubt a reference to the ginormous Super Wal-Mart up Rte. 104 in Plymouth.)...
And this bumper sticker was spotted by the Tilton Outlets this week: “I wish Morgan Freeman was narrating my life.”
Don't we all?
