The snow is snowing, the wind is blowing... and, Baby – it’s cold outside. So why not start planning now for what you’ll be doing in the Lakes Region this summer? Here’s 7 Really Hot Reasons to get going – along with some “insider” tips.
From our friends at ExperienceSquam.com
1. You’ll Get Wet. Wherever you go – from the open broads of Lake Winnipesaukee to the tranquil shores of Squam Lake, from the pristine surroundings of Newfound Lake to the beautiful beaches along Ossipee Lake – the goal is to be in, on and next to the water. So if you’re a boater and there’s a backup at the Big Lake’s friendly marinas in July, you may be able slip in via the two launches at the Ames Farm Inn on Rte. 3 in Gilford. (BTW, the inn also serve a wonderful blueberry pancake breakfast!)
2. You’ll Be Cool. If you arrive sans vessel, there are always great day-cruises available. The M/S Mount Washington is the largest, sailing around Winnipesaukee daily and offering special events like dinner cruises. The Winnipesaukee Belle is a 70-foot replica of a 19th century paddle sailing out of Wolfeboro. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has daily trips around Squam while ExperienceSquam.com takes smaller groups on fishing trips, romantic excursions - even voyages commemorating the filming of “On Golden Pond” 30-plus years ago.
Hart's Turnkey Farm Restaurant was once again named
"Best of NH" by New Hampshire magazine in 2013.
3. You’ll Get Fed Up. Tastes vary, but there are still eateries that some regular visitors consider "must-dos" each summer. Canoe Restaurant and Tavern in Center Harbor may offer the best overall meal with a great waterview. Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith is where you can get a great family “holiday” turkey dinner any day of the year. The Corner House Inn in Sandwich combines a cozy lake-like atmosphere with excellent food. Chequers Villa in Tamworth serves perhaps the best white lasagna on the east coast. Lakes Region Cupcakes in Meredith and Tilton has been named the best cup cakery in the state, while Kellerhausin Weirs Beach is the oldest candy & ice cream shop in New Hampshire - although it’s mostly famous now for its sumptuous ice cream buffet and ribbon candy.

4. You’ll Get Smarter About History. The Wright Museum in Wolfeboro is dedicated to World War II, especially what took place on the “home front.” The Belknap Mill in Laconia is the oldest unaltered brick knitting mill in America and serves as NH's Official Meetinghouse, so there’s always something going on – art shows, music performances, etc. America’s only Police Motorcycle Museum is based in Meredith. Or you can take a glimpse of an American “Downton Abbey”-type estate at Lucknow, the Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough.

5. You’ll Be ‘Cool’ About History: Special mention should be made of Laconia’s Weirs Beach. It’s one of the oldest summer vacation spots in the country with historic buildings and landmarks scattered throughout, including its famous neon 1950s-style sign. The beach sits adjacent to a channel where boats of all kinds cruise, creating an entertaining slow parade of boats and boaters. Nearby are the classic arcade game establishments including Funspot, the largest arcade in America. And of course, this is where the oldest Motorcycle Rally in America launches every June.
Tabin Gardens is a special horticultural attraction.

6. You’ll Take A Walk. Start small by hiking Mount Major in Alton, or Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness. Then move onto great spots in the Belknap Mountains, including the areas in and around the Gunstock Mountain Resort. (BTW, the resort has the largest zipline spans in the continental U.S.) Or try the nearby White Mountains. Then you can stroll the delicate village of Wolfeboro, the Oldest Summer Resort in America, or Mill Falls at the Lake in Meredith. Even slower strolls can be enjoyed at Tarbin Gardens in Franklin.
The Laconia Muskrats hosted the NECBL All-Star game in 2013.
7. You’ll Get Out. Catch one of the the country’s longest-running professional summer theaters at the Barnstormers in Tamworth, or see the acclaimed troupe at the Winnipesaukee Playhousein Meredith. Top-notch acts come to the outdoor Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook in Gilford but superior music can also be heard along the shores of Winnipesaukee at Wolfeboro's Great Waters Music Festival. Newer venues include the Flying Monkey Performance Center, a restored historic theater in Plymouth that’s great for a cozy concert or classic movie - with dinner or a drink. And Pitman’s Freight Room in Laconia (BYOB) is a great venue for jazz, blues and the occasional comedy show. Our current personal favorite evening pastime is watching the Laconia Muskrats, part of the NE Collegiate Baseball League - one of the best collage-age leagues in the country. Bring your own lawn chair for the best experience.
That’s our seven. What have we left out?
