To Top Things Off... The Best

Posted by abohan Minggu, 26 Mei 2013 0 komentar
We've been passing on information lately about informal viewer polls taken by WMUR-TV, naming the top breakfast spots in the state and particularly, in the Lakes Region: best coffee, best pancakes, etc.

Some weeks ago, the folks at the station's New Hampshire Chronicle show took a more thoughtful look at where to get the best cupcakes in the state. They judged the best looking, best tasting, etc.

And in the end, they named the winner of the "Cupcake Crown" is Lakes Region Cupcakes of Tilton. This wonderful place, at 285 Main Street in Tilton's village (a few miles west of the outlets) is a rare treat for the Lakes Region: a terrific place serving a superior product handmade by good people at a reasonable price. And they're not shy about doing unusual things like serving parties, weddings, etc., and making up unusual items like Doritao cupcakes. Give them a call, 286-7776, or stop by a.s.a.p.

The New Hampshire Chronicle Cupcake Crown show will be rebroadcast Monday night. (BTW, the shop also won fist place for the best looking and best "signature" cupcakes.)

Lake Region Reflections

Foodie News: Just a while after we wrote about “disappearing” food menu items like the Red Flannel Hash recently featured at the Cafe Deja Vu diner in Laconia, the eatery has brought the once-familiar New England dish back for a rerun. (Guess that’s what they mean by “déjà vu".)… The Tilt’n Diner is now open 24 hours. And just days ago, owner Alex Ray won the Jim Irwin Community Service Award from the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce. (It’s kinda amazing when you think about how many great restaurateurs there are in the Lakes Region. Besides Alex – who one the Common Man Family of Restaurants, and who one employee called “the most generous man I’ve ever met” – there’s Allan Beetle and his family at Patrick’s Pub in Gilford, the Hart family of Hart’s Turkey Farm in Meredith, etc.… Include all the other places that regularly support all kinds of community organizations and event - and that’s not even talking bout the great food they all serve! It’s an area where we’re especially blessed.).. And at about the same time comes news that the China Bistro on Weirs Boulevard has been named the best place in America to get a crab rangoon. Having eaten them, you won't find any argument here. They really are spectacular... And meanwhile, there's a security guard at the Tilton Outlet Centers who's perfecting the trick of handing a single McDonald's french fry to a chipmunk who lives in front of the Starbuck's. The little guy grabs it between his little claws and scurries away, happy as can be. (And drawing a good deal of smilers from onlookers.)

Talking about eateries and blessings: A drive down Union Avenue in Laconia Friday unveiled this unusual scene – a family of ducks, mama and her brood, making their way across the road from the McDonald’s, heading towards the Paugus Bay. Of course, all traffic north and south stopped – but some out-of-stater tried to weave his way around the car halted in front of him.
And it almost made it - until a local lady in a van honked her horn and halted the driver. We couldn’t make out her shouting, but it sounded a little like, “Show a little respect!”… And just hours later, we spotted a wild turkey and her brood trotting around Belmont. To this untrained eye, the little ones looked more like the baby ducks that their mama. (I said “untrained”.)

Lake Reflections

One of the great “food” surprises of the last year was the Tilton Farmers’ Market.
It opened in the old Agway building on Rte. 3 in the fall and closed this past Saturday. Great food, neighborly vendors, a wonderful atmosphere... It’s the kind of community scene that gives the Lakes Region warm charm during the cold winter. And it was so popular, a police officer had to be on the state highway to unsnarl any possible traffic jams.
But the market is not long for this world.  Joan O’Connor, its owner and the proud producer of Joan’s Famous Composting Worms, says that Autoserve of Tilton, which owns the building and was a generous sponsor this year, needs the space for its own uses.
So when fall 2012 comes around, the 40-plus local farmers, craftsmen and other dealers will literally be out in the cold, unless someone can come forward with a suggestion for a new location. So, keep your eyes and ears open to help out these gallant entrepreneurs. (You can contact Joan at joconnornh@yahoo.com.)...
Hey, what happened to the van with that “Let’s Trade Houses” sign that used to sit off Rte. 106 by Rte. 393 in Loudon? Did the owner ever find a new house? Or did he buy a new car that wasn’t big enough for a sign? Just wondering...
Amazing, but true. Gunstock Mountain Resort, the first ski resort in the state to have a ski lift, is getting ready to celebrate its 75thseason. (Ironically, it was originally called Belknap Mountain Resort, just because someone incorrectly identified the peak. "Gunstock" is much better than "Belknap" - strong, action word, perfect for skiing.) To celebrate, the resort is holding a sale on season ski passes.
And they finally opened their new ZipTour, which includes the fourth and sixth longest ziplines in the world.
See Gunstock.com...
We love funny, thoughtful, interesting signs.
A store in Bristol seems to have a knack for them. Not long ago, it identified itself as “Small Mart.” (No doubt a reference to the ginormous Super Wal-Mart up Rte. 104 in Plymouth.)...
And this bumper sticker was spotted by the Tilton Outlets this week: “I wish Morgan Freeman was narrating my life.”
Don't we all?

Autumn Comes to the Lakes Region

"Autumn usually means a return to day-to-day. It’s back to school, back to work, back to the humdrum of daily living.
"Not in the Lakes Region – when the colors return. Columbus Day is when they’re usually at their peak but they start long before that. First one tree shows some yellow. Then a dash of orange appears along the side of the road. Then the maples burst out in flames. And finally everything turns to warm brown – and they fall, crowding at the bottom of the hills, along the side of the road, crunching under our feet as we walk down the village Main Street."Shopping is particularly fun now. Whether it’s at a yard sale in Laconia, an antique shop in Ossipee, a bookstore in Meredith or the outlet mall in Tilton... It's part of the special anticipation of a new year, a time to turn the page and imagine what wonders lay ahead."
