No problem.
Maybe they'll like these new jackets from Element, (primarily a skateboard company), named after the Oldest Summer Resort in America, better.

In the Water

The Laconia Daily Sun recently reported that the state has bought land alongside Alton Bay for a "real" boat launch on Lake Winnipesaukee.
"Glenn Normandeau, executive director of the NH Fish & Game Department, Harilla Landing on Long Island in Moultonborough, the only other state-owned launch on Lake Winnipeaukee, as a 'nightmare'."

Lakes Region Land for Sale

The Laconia Daily Sun this week featured an update on the old Laconia State School property. State officials are preparing to hire an agent who would start looking for buyers nantionwide for the land, which is located on the top of a hill overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee and other areas of the Lakes Region. Former mayor and current City Councilor Matt Lahey recently recommended the city withdraw its initial bid to buy the property because of possible contamination problems in some of its old buildings, and to see how others may value the land.

Eat & Run, Lakes Region Style

Some of our friends in the media have offered some great thoughts on local hikes and farmstand...

WMUR-TV recently posted the results of an online poll of the top 15 farmstand in the state - which are usually also great places to do some autumn apple-picking.
Naturally, the Lakes Region is well represented...

Mount Major, Alton Bay
Length: 1.4 miles one way
Elevation gain: 1, 159 feet
Time: 2 hours
Highlight: View of Lake Winnipesaukee

The Lakes Region may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a hike to peek at the peak foliage but Mount Major offers more bang for the sightseeing buck than almost any other short hike we can think of. It is a small hill with a big-time view overlooking the state's largest lake. The trailhead is on the west side of Rte. 11 in Alton Bay. It's about 3.4 miles out and back with a rise of 1,159 feet to the 1,784-foot summit of the hill. It just takes about two to three hours, depending on your pace. This is a popular hike for summer campers and you can be overwhelmed by little ones during the warmer weather, but it's much less crowded in the fall. It's a dog-friendly hike to the rock dome with a gorgeous view of the hills around Mount Belknap reflected in the waters of Alton Bay and Lake Winnipesaukee.

More State School Property News

The possible uses of the Lakes Region land formerly known as the site of the Laconia State School for the developmentally disabled has become a favorite topic...
Recently, the Laconia Daily Sun featured two letters. One, by Rep. Alida I. Millham of Gilford, notes that a NH Legislative Study Committee looked into the issue some years ago and found that, despite the property's great location, the real possibility of finding environmentally hazardous materials in the old buildings has made the land much less attractive to private parties. She suggests the land be purchased by the city (for about $2 million) from the state since the local government could then apply for federal funds to could pay for the cleanup.
The idea sounds good but what happens after that? Rep. Millham seems to imply that the property should stay in government hands.
Meanwhile, in another letter, Rep. Robert Greenmore of Meredith opposes selling the land to the city. "I have my doubts if the City of Laconia has the financial where-with-all or the tax base that the state has to do much with the property," he writes, "especially if you believe all the arguments against anyone wanting to buy the property because of all the problems (of possible) contamination."
Greenmore is among a group that, according to a recent Sun article, wants the state to hold onto the land until the real estate market improves.
As she usually does, Rep. Millham makes some excellent points.
And while Rep. Greenmore's letter is a little obscure, he's touched on an important issue as well.
What's most important is not how much money the state makes from the old school land now but how it factors into the Lakes Region's future.
We're glad to see representatives of other area towns getting actively involved in the debate.
