Today was a kind of apology from the Creator for the previous eight days.
It was warm, mostly sunny, even Summer-y: shirtsleeve weather, if not quite "shorts" for most people. A slight breeze ruffled the grass. Butterflies could be seen. A neighborhood dog lay under the shade of a barn while his master gardened. A cat lay on a flat rock, heated by the sun. Birds - apparently as confused as we were by the up-and-down weather of the last few months - finally returned to their songs.
Yellow daffodils dotted the grass – which somehow looked even greener than it did a few days ago. (A week of rain does that.) The leaves on the bushes and trees seemed to be pushing to get past their Springtime limes into their bright and dark Summer green colors.
It was, in many ways, a perfect Saturday.
And Sunday is supposed to be even better.
But, as always, there's news to digest - a woman was walking on Cotton Hill in Gilford when she was badly bitten by a stray dog. The NH Jazz Center, that's made the old Pitman's Freight Room in downtown Laconia so special, is moving to the Margate Resort - great for the music group and the resort but kind of a shame for the old building that had finally found new life hosting those top-flight jazz musicians this Autumn, Winter and Spring. And Laconia Savings Bank is changing its name to the Bank of New Hampshire. (Didn't we already have one of those?)
So we got this out-of-focus, too-dark-in-the-foreground shot on our cell phone camera while out walking today... It's not really clear, but Mount Washington is the background. Two young people had stopped on the road, just sitting by their SUV and enjoying the view.
A taste of the Summer before it officially gets here... Enjoy it, since the forecast is for rain Monday and Tuesday(!).. But then the forecast was for all sun last week so, who knows?
An old Russian proverb goes something like this: “Look for the best. Expect the worst.”
In the Lakes Region, you know somehow the “best” will outweigh the “worst” every time.
