The Lakes Region Wait

It comes around every Spring... that long, seemingly interminable wait between the first warm days of the season and a sustained burst of warm weather.

This year it probably seems longer than usual because of the cruel March "joke" we endured - a full week of clear blue skies and temperatures in the eighties. Then in April, another stretch of great warmth - not quite as drastic but still unseasonably pure.

Now: it's rain, rain every day - not cold but no end to grey skies in sight. ("They" say it will end Sunday but "they" said last week that this whole week would be sunny and warm, so we're somewhat skeptical.)

We are forced to take drastic measures and go back to our archives to find two wonderful Spring shots from our book, "The Lakes Region of New Hampshire: Four Seasons, Countless Memories." These are both by the multi-talented Bob Manley of Sanbornton. (See his work at bobdonpaul.com and hermitwoods.com.)

Bob says this shot of "Meredith Adirondack Chairs" is one of his most popular.

Lakes Region Life Rhythms

There's a certain seasonal rhythm to life in the Lakes Region.
Yes, it exists everywhere to some extent. But it's different when you live in a place like this.
In most places, it goes something like this. Fall: new school and new starts. Winter: Christmas season, then snow. Spring: flowers, ball games, golf and gardening. Summer: long, warm days, comfortable nights - time to slow down and enjoy things around you.
But in a semi-resort community like the Lakes Region, it's slightly different.
Fall is slowdown, when the number of "summer people" drop and people can catch up with one another.
Winter is Christmas and New Years and skiing - but it can also be tough. It's fun and beautiful but no one makes money without the "summer people", right?
Spring is exciting: This is when we see new projects unveiled, when fresh ideas surface, when news about what's going on on Main Street becomes exciting to everyone.
Summer is wonderful. It's work and it's busy. There's boats to deliver, meals to serve, "summer people" who need attention... It's profitable, and it's not punishing - and there are still warn nights, new movies, etc., for us as well. But it is different than what most people experience.
Not "worse" - although at times we wish we OWNED the boat, instead of washing it off - but different.
Still, there are times - especially in the Spring and the Summer, between the plans and the projects - when you're caught unexpectedly by the most wonderful reasons to be here.

This explosion of color and life is in Laconia. It's from Stewart Park, near the intersection of Rte. 3/Union Avenue and Main Street, looking down toward the Belknap Mill.
In the foreground, a glorious patch of flowers. Behind (barely visible here) is the old mill waterfall and nearby, folks are fishing in the Winnipesaukee River.

So the rhythms are different here. But no one is complaining.

Last of the Winter Wonders

As sure as the seasons change (which is a strange remark this year), there comes a time every “mud season” – i.e., some time between late February and mid-April – when nearly everyone in the Lakes Region wishes they could go to Florida for a week.

Well, this year, Florida came to us.

Last week, anyway, temperatures here were in the 80s. The radio reported daily “high temperature” records on a regular basis.

The official “ice-out” observers reported the earliest ever, Friday, March 23.

And that same night, the seasonal “peeping” of frogs could be heard for the first time along Rte. 140.

But now nights temperatures are back to the low 30s. We may get a coating of snow during the weekend.

Nevertheless, the “summer break” left an unmistakable impression – one that also comes along at least once a year, usually sometime in late April or May.

The seasonal shift has begun – and it cannot be stopped.

As the old Gospel song goes, “Oh, Happy Day!”
