Does anyone in the Lakes Region really need WMUR-TV viewers to tell us where to get the best Thanksgiving Day dinner (if you're going out)?

You're in the Lakes Region on Thanksgiving Day and can't eat at the homestead.

Where would you go? (from their website).

No, didn't think so either... (Just make sure you're north of Concord.)

No. 5 The Mount Washington, as it cruises around Winnipesaukee.

No.3 A tie between the wonderful Common Man restaurants and Steele Hill Resort in Sanbornton.

No. 1 Hart's Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith. (Naturally- has any place ever served one kind of meat so consistently, and so perfectly? Must be some kind of record.)

Spring on the Lakes

"Spring is the season of change in the Lakes Region.

"Frost heaves make a drive down a country road a rollercoaster adventure. 'Mud season' slows down your gardening plans. You wonder if that pile of snow by the side of the road will ever disappear.

"Then the first warm day comes. Coats are replaced by sweaters, jackets and shirtsleeves. (One optimist over there is wearing shorts.) Folks are standing outside their pickup trucks, talking about summer plans. Crocuses tentatively poke their heads out of the dark soil. 'Ice-out' arrives, when all the ports of the cruise ship Mount Washington are clear and open for docking. A bud appears on a tree. Small boats can be seen rocking gently at their moorings. Bikers start coming to town.

"'Anticipation' season is in full swing. It’s time to enjoy our haven, our home, our garden, culture and history. This is the Lakes Region, the place we call home, whether it’s for the whole year, a few weeks or just a few days."

This is the time of year when the Lakes Region of New Hampshire becomes a palette of both colors and textures.
The last few days, grey skies gave us downpours that drenched the deck of the M/S Mount Washington as it sat at the Weirs Beach dock. And soft showers only added to the small lakes that cornered some street in Laconia and some of the bigger towns.
Today we saw some blue skies. And by Sunday, the middle of the Columbus Day weekend, the forecast is for bright sunshine in 80-plus degree temperatures.
And it's a good thing, too. The Mount only has about three more weeks before it goes into its off-season berth. (For information, see cruisenh.com.)
