Wolfeboro is a beautiful town, especially in the autumn.
But this fall, America's Oldest Summer Resort has an added element of color.
Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is a member of a family that has owned a large seasonal home in town on Lake Winnipesaukee for years. His large family spent some time there this past summer.
If Gov. Romney was to be elected - which appears more likely now than it did several months ago - the Lakes Region community could become the "summer White House." (It's a peculiar designation that's been held by homes in Kennebunkport, Me., during the presidency of George W. Bush, and Hyannis on Cape Cod, Ma., for John Kennedy.)
You might think the prospect of enjoying at least four years of special attention on the world's would appeal to local folks, and it does to some. That's judging from the huge "Romney/Ryan" road signs planted in front of some homes.
But others don't like the idea... So, there's probably more "Obama/Biden" signs in and around the village.
It's a singular scene: Your neighbor is running for the highest office in the country and there's a sign on your lawn that says, "Please don't vote for him."
Maybe if he ran for selectman, things would be different. Maybe not.
Several other signs stood out.
"We are the 99%," read one.
It's conspicuous, because it's in front of a lovely house that sits on Lake Wentworth; a conservative estimate would put the home's value at about half-million dollars.
The others were visible along the roads connecting Wolfeboro, Alton and Gilmanton.
"Save America, Vote Republican," read one.
"Save the Planet, Vote Democratic," replied another.
Perhaps an overgeneralization in both cases?
