Preston Shannon has often opened

for the blues giant B.B. King.

One of the great somewhat under-heralded charms of 'off-season' in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire is the Laconia Putnam Fund. The charitable group uses returns on a substantial gift made years ago to bring some wonderful musicians and theatrical artists to the area in free concerts.
On Friday, the great Preston Shannon, a blues/soul/rock artist who is known as the "King of Beale Street" took over the Laconia High School auditorium. It only took this wonderful, jazzy musician two songs to have the whole place rocking and people dancing in the aisle. What a show... My friend and jazz musician Dave Dexter of Alton said Shannon's version of 'Purple Rain' was the best he'd ever heard.

Next month, the fund is bringing in Duke Robillard and Coco Montaya for one show, and then the National Marionette Theater's version of 'Pinocchio'. And in March, around St. Patrick's Day, the great Ronan Tynan, one of the Irish tenors, is tentatively scheduled.

What a gift to the Lakes Region is the Putnam Fund.
