Lakes Region Listening

I was crossing over Cotton Hill in Gilford one recent afternoon when the Subaru radio caught a strange sound.

It sounds like classical music. But I can’t place the melody. No Beethoven. Brahms?

No, this has a more modern sound… Gershwin? Phillip Glass?

No, there are violins. It sounds like a quartet of violins, racing back and forth across the pleasant melody. The theme is familiar but still not recognizable.

Then, after a few moments, I get it.

I don’t know the title, but I know whom I’ve heard doing it: Van Morrison. That’s right, the popular R&B/jazz/folks singer from Ireland. It’s one of his early songs, maybe from the “Moondance” album, and it sounds different.

Like some Mendelssohn chamber music. Very “classical,” with no drums, no other instruments accompanying the strings.

I stopped the car and listened for a little while.

The Doors’ “People Are Strange.”

“All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles.

The Eagles’ “Take It Easy.”

All done in the same peculiar, interesting manner: four or five violins, sometimes a cello and a viola… and no guitars, no singing... Just the pure bones of the songs.

After a while, a station identification comes on: “You’re listening to WWHK-FM, 102.3. You’re favorite songs win a classical touch.”

Later I learn that WWHK is out of Concord and not always available in the Lakes Region.

But if you can catch it, listen. It will take you by surprise.

And, while you’re tuned in, listen for some other big changes coming up on the local radio dial. The word is that WEEI, the popular Boston sports radio station, will soon have spot on the Lakes Region FM dial. (More to follow.)
